GET IN BALANCE WITH A TEA TOX
By Dr Anna Cabeca, DO, FACOG
I love an occasional tea tox, especially with hormone-balancing teas. These include teas such as black cohosh, chasteberry, ginseng, mint, chamomile, passion flower, red clover, and many other herbal teas. I cover the power of such teas in my new book, Menupause.
What exactly is a “tea tox”? It is essentially a cleanse in which you consume several cups of tea throughout the day. How you tea tox varies. You can do:
One day of tea toxing in which you consume nothing but various types of tea for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks. I recommend limiting this type of tea tox for one day only and using it no more than once or twice month.
A partial tea tox in which you consume tea for breakfast and lunch, but have a full healthy meal for dinner. You can do this type of tea tox for up to 6 days, depending on how you feel.
A less aggressive tea tox. Consume a couple of cups of tea in the morning – plain without creamer or sweetener as a part of intermittent fasting, in which you go 16 hours without food (most of which is overnight). You can stop eating at 8 p.m. in the evening; have tea for breakfast the next day; then have your first meal of the day at 11 pm or noon. You can also sip on your tea of choice throughout the day.
When I fast using teas, I like to follow the Japanese tradition of tea ceremonies, which are opportunities for prayer and meditation. With a bit of awareness, mindfulness, and by simply slowing down long enough to truly enjoy it, your cup of tea can have a lasting impact on your whole day – and perhaps even your spiritual path.
Here are some easy steps to creating your own tea ceremony:
1. Select your tea. Really, any tea you choose is a perfect choice for your ceremony! Whatever tea you choose, make sure to purchase organic herbal teas, and opt for caffeine-free varieties since caffeine may worsen menopausal symptoms.
2. Brew your tea in mindfulness. Allow it time to steep, consciously bringing your attention to the present moment. Remind yourself that this moment will never come again, so you should give it your full attention and respect. When your tea is ready, take a moment to hold the mug near your nose and just breathe in the warmth and scent.
3. Drink your tea with appreciation. Take tiny, slow sips. Feel the warmth, taste the flavor, sense the energy, smell the aroma, and tune into gratitude for this little moment of joy your cup of tea brings.
4. End with gratitude. Thank the tea for sharing its leaves, beauty and medicinal properties, in order to give you this calming meditation. And give thanks and appreciation for all the blessings in your life.
